Booked! @ Cultural Futures - Chapter One

Booked! @ Cultural Futures - Chapter One

Pull up a chair, gentle readers (we couldn't resist!). This is Chapter One of our brand-new adventure: the Cultural Futures Book Shop—a curated, all-digital bookstore where every purchase helps write a stronger next chapter for culture in Canada’s rural, remote, and underrepresented communities.

Yes, we’re a little bookish (okay, Booked!), and we’re proudly biased toward titles that turn ideas into action. Think cultural leadership, museum and heritage practice, placemaking and community building, digital transformation in culture, and equity-centered approaches that help more people see themselves in the story.

If you’ve ever wished for a place where cultural practitioners, municipal leaders, artists, curators, storytellers—and the folks who cheer them on—could discover practical reads with big hearts and bigger horizons… you’ve found it. Let’s turn the page together.

Why a book shop? Because ideas move communities.

At the Centre for Cultural Futures Canada (CFCC), our work is rooted in a simple conviction: when culture thrives, communities do too. Books help us do the slow, thoughtful work of change—connecting lived experience, evidence, and imagination. Our shop is a tool for that mission:

  • Amplify rural, remote and underrepresented voices. We elevate authors and publishers who speak to the realities beyond the big urban centres—because innovation doesn’t stop at city limits.
  • Make it practical. You’ll find hand-picked titles that translate big concepts into everyday strategies—grant-friendly language, board-ready frameworks, and program ideas you can pilot next month.
  • Build shared knowledge. A common bookshelf gives us a shared vocabulary across museums, cultural centers, libraries, festivals, municipalities, and grassroots groups.

Rather than fund multi-national online booksellers, your purchase helps fund CFCC’s community work, research, and cultural capacity-building right here in Canada—so your next great read also underwrites the next great local project. That’s a plot twist we can all get behind.

What will be on our (digital) shelves?

We’ve organized the shop around the topics we use in the field and in our training:

  • Cultural Leadership & Innovation — vision, organizational strategy, innovation labs, governance and board development, future-of-work in culture.
  • Museum & Heritage Studies — interpretive planning, collections care, exhibition design, community curation, ethics, and policy.
  • Placemaking & Community Building — rural cultural planning, creative main streets, eventful cities, social cohesion, and cultural vitality indicators.
  • Digital Transformation in Culture — data dashboards, CRM, digital storytelling, accessible online experiences, AI in cultural organizations.
  • Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEI) — equity frameworks, Indigenous knowledge and governance, accessibility, language justice, anti-racism in practice.
  • Diverse Voices — 2SLGBTQI+, Black, Indigenous and other racialized authors, newcomers, disability perspectives, and voices too often left out of the canon.
  • New Arrivals & Featured Collections — fresh releases, staff picks, and thematic bundles for seasonal programming.

We’ll keep these collections fresh by highlighting new thought leaders we come across in unexpected places and by spotlighting Canadian and international titles that resonate with cultural organizations and those who work for them.

Instant, accessible, and ready when you are

The shop is ebook-first for a reason: to make sure books can get into your hands easily and quickly. No shipping delays. No “out of stock.” Just instant downloads that work wherever you do. Planning a board retreat? Need ideas for a creative placemaking project? Writing exhibit labels? Resources can be in your hands today.

And because we care about access, we prioritize readable file formats, clear metadata, and discoverability—so even the busiest executive director can find a relevant title fast.

Rewards that stack up: Northern Lights Rewards

We love a good book and a good benefit. When you buy through Cultural Futures:

We’ll be adding new benefits as the community grows. Consider it a thank-you for helping us keep Canadian culture well-read and well-resourced.

You can sign up for the Book Club here - the first 10 people who become Northern Lights Book Club and Rewards Members will enjoy a small welcome gift from us for being early adopters. We won't spill the tea about our gift, but we're pretty sure you will love it!
